Don’t know if it’s just luck, but we’ve seen LOTS of great sunsets here in our temp OC home, more than back in Santa Monica. Is Orange County lucky when it comes to sunsets?

Huntington Beach, Surf City USA, is one of the first place in the US mainland where surfing was practiced after George Freeth & Duke Kahanamoku of Hawaii introduced the sport in the early 1900s. Today, Surf City has a great downtown with a street fair every Tuesday, a surf museum, hundreds of bars & restaurants, and still retains a very surf-y vibe.

Balboa Island, near our temporary house-sit, is a shopper’s paradise with cute  shops selling unique items you won’t find elsewhere. There are numerous candy and ice cream shops (frozen bananas – yum!) along with the cutest little car ferry that holds only 3 cars!

The surf is good in Surf City USA! While living here in our temporary OC home, I had to try surfing in Huntington Beach of course. It’s one of the places where surfing started in California, and still has regular surf contests plus a loyal cadre of local surfers who say the waves near the HB Pier are the best around!

The Argentine Peso continues to be weak compared to the US Dollar and other currencies, though its value has remained fairly steady in 2014. The Peso traded at around 3 per USD in 2002, and now is around 8 per USD.

Geek Paradise! SoCal has lots of electronics stores, including many Fry’s locations plus a few Micro Centers. I could easily spend my entire day and all my money here at Micro Center!!

The generally un-remarkable UCI campus has one VERY cool feature: one group of student dorms is named after Lord of the Rings! (Non-LOTR geeks stop reading now to avoid eye-rolling boredom.)  Can you imagine living in Lorien, Isengard, The Shire, or Whispering Wood? For me, it would have to be Rivendell. Common areas include the Arkenstone study lounge, Helm’s Deep fitness room, Brandywine dining commons. And the head of the dorm area is in Bag End!

We’re living now next to UCI, the University of California, Irvine. It’s one of the newer of the 10 UCs and has 29,000 students, UCI is the largest employer in Orange County. To my eyes, campus architecture at UCI is a bit boring, especially compared to lovely UC-Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, etc. But UCI has the most fun mascot – the Anteater, voted on by students shortly after the 1965 founding of the university. The anteater narrowly beat the next possible mascot candidate “none of the above”.

I have searched far and wide in all our overseas travels for Farmers Markets, always hoping to find ones as good as our FM in lovely Santa Monica. I still haven’t found it! But I did find one close, just down the 405 freeway in our temporary home of Irvine. The Saturday market in a shopping center parking lot across from the UC-Irvine campus has over 100 vendors including plenty of organic growers. Orange County has many citizens of Asian descent and there were many booths selling Asian pears, etc.
